Market Visit

Test It at the Market

  1. CollectGather your sample the morning of your visit, following the sample guide.
  2. Bring itFind the Dr. Dirt table at Makuʻu on Sunday, or arrange a drop-off.
  3. Take home a planCore results while you wait, with a prescription to follow.

Core Test — One Soil Sample

pH, EC, redox (ORP), quick live microscopy and one prescription. Brix is included when you bring suitable fresh young leaves or a whole plant collected before noon.

$15

Recommended Three-Layer Profile

Three core tests: top, middle and deep soil kept separate. The combined profile results in one prescription.

$30

NPK Reagent Upgrade

Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium screening. Soil or plant is $20 each; comparing one soil sample with one plant sample is recommended.

$20 / $35 both

MicroBIOMETER Upgrade

Additional microbial biomass and fungal-to-bacterial context. Charged per sample.

+$25

Crop-Cover Recommendation

Matched to area, crop, region, elevation, weather and project goals.

Save nutrients. Reduce runoff.

Measured applications can reduce waste and help keep excess nutrients out of porous ground and waterways, where nutrient-rich runoff can contribute to coastal algal blooms and aggressive invasive plant growth.

Market visits: before you arrive

Collect Without Changing the Sample

Representative, fresh, uncompacted samples make the measurements more useful. Keep each depth separate unless you specifically want a rapid blended overview. Mobile Field Lab visits: Dr. Dirt collects the samples on site.

Soil samples

  1. Scrape away surface mulch or loose leaves to expose bare soil.
  2. Dig straight down to approximately six inches.
  3. Collect a small amount from the top inch, the 3–4 inch root zone, and the bottom near six inches.
  4. Keep the three depths in separate clean capped tubes. Clean sealed plastic bags may substitute.
  5. Keep every sample loose. Never press, pack, or compact the soil.
  6. Place tubes or plastic bags inside a paper bag to keep them dark and cool.
  7. Collect as close to testing time as possible and note any delay longer than two hours.

Plant material for Brix and plant NPK

  • Bring fresh young leaves or a whole small plant so fresh growth can be selected.
  • Keep plant material shaded, cool, and as fresh as possible.
  • Never collect Brix material after noon. No exceptions.
  • Label samples with crop, location, collection time, and any treatment you want compared.
Why this matters: light, heat, delay, mixed depths, and compaction can change what the sample shows. Better collection supports a better prescription and helps avoid unnecessary nutrient applications.

What I Measure

No one reading tells the whole story. I select methods that fit the question and interpret them together with the sample history and field context.

Microscopy and biological observation

Bright-field, darkfield, oil-immersion examination, staining methods, hemocytometer counts, quick live microscopy, detailed organism observations, and MicroBIOMETER readings where applicable.

Nutrients and plant response

Reagent-based soil and plant NPK screening, including nitrogen/nitrate, phosphorus/phosphate, and potassium context, plus fresh-leaf Brix for plant sugars and response.

pH, EC, redox, and turbidity

Digital pH, electrical conductivity, and Eh/ORP measurements, with turbidity testing where it suits a liquid preparation or monitoring question.

Field observations and comparisons

Temperature, moisture, odor, texture, root-zone conditions, sample depth, untreated-versus-treated comparisons, batch records, photos, and changes across time.
