From Synthetic Chemistry to Soil Biology: The Evolution of Dr. Dirt
I’ll admit it: I started out in a lab world mixing chemicals, doing things I probably shouldn’t have been doing. But during a farm program, something shifted—I fell in love with plants.
When I left that program, I brought that technical laboratory mindset straight into hydroponics and aeroponics. I learned to formulate my own custom nutrients to keep plants healthy and systems pristine. But honestly? I grew to hate the sterile reality of it. The sheer amount of chemical processing and heavy synthetic inputs needed just to get a result felt wrong.
I wanted a cleaner, truly natural way. I tried standard organics, but basic plant extracts just weren’t moving the needle. That’s when the lightbulb finally went off: it wasn’t about chemistry, it was about biology.
That realization blew the doors open for me. I dove headfirst into Korean Natural Farming (KNF) and JADAM. I stopped buying bottled inputs and started capturing indigenous microorganisms (IMOs), brewing wild ferments, and making low-cost, hyper-local inputs from the land around me. It was revolutionary.
